A hanging electric fence is a modern engineering marvel designed primarily to mitigate the human-elephant conflict (HEC). Unlike traditional fences that are anchored firmly to the ground, a hanging fence consists of vertical wires suspended from a horizontal main line supported by high posts. This design allows the wires to dangle freely, creating a psychological and physical barrier that elephants find difficult to breach.

The fundamental concept relies on the elephant's high intelligence. Elephants are known to use logs or their tusks to break traditional fence posts or push through tensioned wires. However, with a hanging fence, there are no fixed lower wires or posts for the elephant to exert leverage against. The dangling wires deliver a non-lethal but sharp electric pulse, deterring the animal immediately.

The architecture of a hanging electric fence is unique. It typically involves posts standing 10 to 14 feet tall, which is significantly higher than conventional 5-foot posts. These posts are placed at wider intervals, sometimes up to 15-20 meters apart, reducing the material cost per kilometer. A high-tensile main wire runs across the tops of these posts.

Hanging fences are ideally used in areas with dense vegetation or uneven terrain. In Sri Lanka, they are increasingly deployed around villages, paddy fields, and forest borders. Because the wires are suspended high up, small animals like wild boar or deer can pass underneath without triggering the fence, preserving the local ecosystem while focusing specifically on elephant deterrence.
